Most dental issues can wait for a scheduled appointment. Some cannot. If you are experiencing severe tooth pain, a tooth that has been knocked out, significant swelling in the face or jaw, a lost crown that is causing discomfort, or trauma to the mouth, call the office immediately.
Before you arrive, rinse gently with warm water. For a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist, milk is best, the patient’s own saliva is the next best, and bring it with you. For pain or swelling, a cold compress on the outside of the cheek can help.
For life-threatening symptoms, difficulty breathing, severe facial swelling that is spreading, uncontrolled bleeding, go directly to the nearest emergency room.
